Fifty-two teams attempted to make the field, with Kasey Kahne capturing the pole with a lap time of 28.792 sec./192.553 mph. Sorenson rolled out 13th for his qualifying run, turning a fast lap of 29.056 sec./190.804 mph. Sorenson’s Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates teammates Casey Mears and David Stremme qualified 10th and 38th respectively.
The 325-lap event is set to go green at 11:00 am ET on Monday. The race will air live on FX television on PRN radio.
Sorenson turned in his best qualifying effort of 2006 at what he considers his hometown track. Sorenson grew up just down the road from Atlanta Motor Speedway, and he pleased the local fans by turning the 15th-fastest lap in Friday evening’s qualifying round for the Golden Corral 500 set to take place on Sunday.
“I was hoping to be a little better than that,” said Sorenson after his two-lap qualifying effort. “We were second fastest after practice and I really would’ve liked to back that up tonight. We felt like we needed to tighten up the car with air pressure before my run, and it turns out we didn’t really need to. The car pushed up in the corners and that hurt our momentum a little. Still, that was a solid lap and now we’ll focus on getting the car set up for Sunday’s race. It’s important for us to get a respectable finish so we can move ourselves up in the points.”
